Editing for Plain Language

A plain language document clearly conveys its message to the intended audience. This course teaches you how to apply the principles of plain language to edit the words, structure, and design of communications. Through group discussions and hands-on exercises with a variety of document types, you will leave with the tools you need to make any document efficient, effective, and usable. Beyond editing techniques, this course will inspire you to recognize opportunities for plain language editing and communicate its value to colleagues, clients, writers, subject-matter experts, and managers.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the principles of plain language as defined by Canadian and international standards
  • Work with authors to identify the intended audience for written communications
  • Assess and edit a broad range of communications using plain language principles
  • Manage the use of terminology, acronyms, and jargon
  • Revise documents to meet audience needs as well as accessibility, word count, or other requirements
  • Create a plain language or decision guide for your organization or clients
